Ohm Power Europe Ltd
Ohm Power Europe Ltd draws on a UK professional team with over 200 years worth of combined & relevant experience in their own areas of expertise in engineering, scientific, service & technical matters including :
- Metallurgy,
- Solid Fuel Combustion,
- Fluid & Thermo Dynamics,
- Heavy Duty Steel Fabrication,
- Structural & Marine Engineering,
- Extra heavy duty high specification Welding,
- Plumbing, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
The UK PYROHM is a Premium Quality Product because of its number of innovative technical improvements. The fact that we do not cut corners with steel thicknesses or British Standard grades which are CNC precision plasma cut. We also use welding techniques more widely used on :
marine ship building,
structural construction,
heavy plant engineering,
industrial petro-chemical
steel work applications rather than light weight domestic product levels
Where accessible and practical, we heavy duty, double weld main structural components on both sides of the joint
For example 1, the cylindrical Furnace Chamber 15mm thick wall and the 2x 15mm thick End Cap Plates are 10mm fillet welded together on both internal and external surfaces. This equates to 15mm of steel reinforced with 20mm of dense grade welds making a total joint thickness of 35mm
For example 2, the 8mm thick wall Furnace Chamber Riser Box Section are 10mm fillet welded on both internal and external surfaces. This equates to 8mm of steel reinforced with 20mm of dense grade welds making a total joint thickness of 28mm
These joints are more substantial than our competitors and demonstrate our Ohm Power Europe Ltd attention to quality and technical detail
We are so confident in our product's superior design and build quality that every UK PYROHM comes complete with a Conditional Limited 5 Year Warranty covering the Main Structural Steel Work Component Parts, the Furnace Chamber, Water Jacket Tank, Chimney Flue, Access Hatch and Support Plinth assemblies. This is why our forecasted 30 Year operational working design life span is an achievable and realistic period if maintained in accordance with our Pro-active Bi-Annual Preventative Maintenance Plan. However, our competitor's might not have such a belief, conviction and depth of knowledge in their own products to offer this degree of support

UK PYROHM
The original Outdoor Wood Boiler ( OWB ) units were first made in the USA about 40 years ago and appeared in the early 1970s in remote, rural and countryside areas. Many of these US units generally remain the same format today as when they were first released following the old saying " if it's not broken, then don't fix it ." However, Ohm Power Europe feels that this is not an acceptable excuse not to constantly research, develop and improve a product where possible for the customers benefit
Back then US OWB units were often made in DIY garages and small agricultural workshops from light weight scrap & 2nd hand thin steel sheets (<5mm) rather than plate thickness grade & using rough hand held angle grinder cut parts. By today's standards OWB were very basic, sometimes crude and simple units uncontrolled by any formal technical, quality, performance, emission, efficiency, safety or engineering codes of practice. Some are still made to this adhoc level with rudimentary ply board templates as guides

Typical US OWB Firebox Chamber
These units were designed to be used on Domestic Residential & Commercial Central Heating applications. The Water Jacket Tank because of its high capacity standing volume can also be incorporated in to the following applications and can perform the function of a centralised thermal buffer / accumulator water store in conjunction with other heat generating sources such as renewable or conventional:
1. Roof mounted wet solar panels,
2. Air and Ground source heat pump systems,
3. Heat recovery from static diesel generator radiators,
4. Waste heat rejection from milk sterilisation processing etc.

The concept was to enable the practical large scale use of wood fuel heating rather than the existing, impractical, potentially toxic & dirty indoor small scale wood stove space heaters, open hearth fires and low efficiency back boiler furnace incinerators

Typical US OWB Firebox Chamber Access
The basic concept is a cylindrical steel inner core Furnace Chamber type firebox in to which wood in the form of raw un-split logs sections, scrap off cut timber, re-claim roof joists, trusses, floor boards, freight pallets & partition wall frame waste is loaded by hand via a rudimentory hatch and manually fired up
Typical US OWB without Outer Shed Housing Panels
Surrounding the Furnace Chamber is a secondary outer rectangular or square Open Ventend Non-Pressurised steel chamber which forms a Water Jacket Tank. This contains the chemically treated rust, sludge inhibitors and anti freeze glycol central heating water. This is directly heated by the Furnace Chamber encapsulated inside it capturing & storing the conducted, convected & radiant heat. This effectively replaces the less thermally efficient & bulky separate add on accumulator cylinders often found on many small scale Biomass boilers
Typical US OWB inside the Water Jacket Tank
showing the external firebox cylinder wall
This concentric steel chamber arrangement is then housed in a very close fitting drop over weather and fire proof shed housing for outdoor protection & stuffed with a relatively thin layer of roof lagging loft type insulation which in US OWB can be as thin as only 100mm as there is little available free space left within the casement frame work for a decent thermally efficient 400mm minimum thick jacket coat. As a result heat loss from regular OWB Water Jacket Tanks in severe winter weather conditions can be significant in a short period of time requiring the combustion of even more Biomass fuel to top up this loss
Typical US OWB Firebox Chamber Hatch
The most common and often prefered US winter heating method is predominantly the "warm air ducted" system which doubles up in the summer for air conditioning cooling and requires a smaller, lower capacity OWB Water Jacket Tank as it is only feeding a car radiator size type heating battery coil
Typical US OWB without Outer Shed Housing Panels
In 2006 we investigated and evaluated the products of over 20 major US potential OWB manufacturers. They were assessed on the basis of over 30 different specification, techical, engineering, emission, efficiency and safety categories and we subsequently started supplying UK market customers with various US OWB models
By 2009 with a growing number of US OWB units sold in to the UK we had gained a wealth of user feed back. This included invaluable points on actual operating characteristics, efficiency, emission, structural and safety matters. So we began to formulate ideas for significant modifications, improvements and practical benefits
Ohm Power Europe Ltd recognised the intrinsict fundamental benefits of this Carbon Neutral OWB concept. We anticipated that an appliance such as this but, made to the UK's high technical and quality standards embracing the latest efficiency and smoke emission reducing innovations would be a viable central heating solution in the UK & EU on suitable niche site applications
UK PYROHM Gasification Furnace Chamber, Chimney Flue & Air Intake Channel
Therefore a UK updated and improved version would make an invaluable contribution towards reducing Carbon Dioxide heating emissions when compared with conventional fossil fuels such as Oil & LPG. This could also aid with reducing the growing Fuel Poverty issue in UK Remote, Rural and Countryside areas
UK PYROHM external Gasification Furnace Chamber cylinder wall & end disc plate
Therefore in 2009 we set about reverse engineering & re-designing a premium quality product more in keeping with UK heating requirements. In early 2011 we launched the UK PYROHM range of Gasification grade combustion process, rugged, thermally efficient, versatile & fuel tolerant Outdoor Solid Multi Fuel Biomass Wood Furnace Boiler Hydronic Appliances
In the UK and EU this is an exciting and relatively new concept based on the UK PYROHM appliance scale and specification quality
In basic terms, these Ohm Power Europe UK PYROHM appliances have LARGER Fuel and Water capacities than regular US OWB units and are more in keeping with high demand and water circuit intensive UK & EU perimeter radiator, under floor and air blown heating systems. They are also generally of higher efficiency and produce significantly lower levels of smoke emissions as this range incorporates a Furnace Chamber with an elevated Gasification combustion operating process temperature
Our Ohm Power Europe team took over 2 years and a high degree of professional pride in systematically reverse engineering the original very basic US versions and went back to fundamental technical levels incorporating over 20 significant improvements in designing, producing and testing the UK PYROHM
Our inspiration was gained from the motto of the US aircraft manufacturer the Grumman Corporation who made the famous F6F Hellcat fighter during World War 2, with their studies beginning in early 1938. The Grumman motto was: " Make it strong, make it work, make it simple.” Their engineers were encouraged to overdesign the aircraft structure, ensuring they exceeded US Navy requirements by what was called a "Schwendler factor", after vice-president of engineering at the time Bill Schwendler
This was the same methodology Ohm Power Europe Ltd utilised in our own work on the UK PYROHM particularly on the structural steel and welding in order to make it both consistently over perform to specification and also last beyond even our own forecasted expectation of 30 years operational working life span
The result of this is an up to date, high specification appliance range with increased efficiency and lower emissions. It is also a heavy duty premium quality grade Outdoor Solid Multi Fuel Wood Furnace Boiler appliance launched by Ohm Power Europe Ltd in January 2011 called the UK PYROHM appliance range
A heavy weight Biomass boiler such as the UK PYROHM are operationally available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week / 365 days a year as necessary and are not affected by adverse weather conditions when they are most needed unlike other sustainable technologies such as wind and solar which fluctuate
A particular Ohm Power Europe Ltd cause for concern with US OWB units was in the area of Energy Conservation. We wanted to increase the overall thermal efficiency of the product range. However the typical US advice regarding inherently low level efficiency was to " just add in more fuel " which we found to be an unacceptable approach. Our concerns were that Biomass fuel is a valuable energy commodity in it's own right which needs to be utilised effectively & not just consumed without regard for wastage. Afterall, the more heat kept in the Furnace Chamber is more energy to supply the Water Jacket Tank & the load
Our own research & tests showed that for instance, just by changing the Furnace Chamber Access Hatch shape & increasing the material steel composition, insulation properties, air seals & air lock gapping space together with other modifications, we could signifcantly reduce the thermal losses from this single aspect alone by over 80%. We then looked for other fundamental areas of US OWB weakness & re-designed those as well. By reducing heat losses on the basis of 20% here, 35% there etc, these soon mounted up and have made a valuable contribution to improving the UK PYROHM's Overall Thermal Efficiency which stands at up to 89% maximum depending on the individual model
By adopting this quantify, qualify, review & improvement approach, our UK PYROHM appliances are significantly superior on about 20 different technical aspects when compared to bulk standard OWB units. The combined Energy Conservation & Overall Thermal Efficiency improvements we have made indicate that a " like for like kWh rated " low grade US OWB could potentially consume as much as 60% more Biomass fuel in it's operational working life time than our UK PYROHM. This could mean a combined total extra usage on a 105kWh appliance in the order of almost 4,000 metric tonnes over a 30 year period on a constant 365 days per year high demand heating load
UK PYROHM
Our UK PYROHM appliances are rated using high density hard wood with a Relative Moisture Content of about 12% and is capable of generating about 3.0kW per kg. However, they can be hand loaded with a wide variety & mixture of 100% Carbon Neutral rated clean, dry & untreated Solid Biomass Fuels as they are fuel tolerant including:
- Un-processed raw wood in the form of unsplit logs & branches,
- Demolition waste & scrap timber,
- Sawn production off cuts,
- Charcoal briquettes,
- Freight pallets,
- Peat blocks,
- Straw bales
Extraneous metal bits in the wood fuel such as steel screws, nails, bolts, rods, brackets and hinges etc are not an issue with the UK PYROHM as there no motorised log loading chains or pellet / chip auger feeder parts to foul or jam. This accidental waste is just left on the Fire Grate for safe disposal

UK PYROHM appliances are so heavily constructed that they can even take Carbon based solid fuels which produce higher combustion temperatures up to 1,000°C. With over 50,000 UK domestic residential coal users this is still a viable high capacity & safer central heating option:
- Smoke free coal,
- BBQ nuggets,
- Coke

This makes the UK PYROHM a truly adaptable, versatile & fuel tolerant appliance. Why be limited to just a Pellet of Chip fired Biomass boiler when this system can take such a wide range of both Carbon Neutral & conventional solid fuel loads
The types of heating loads which can be fed from a UK PYROHM include:
1. Conventional perimeter steel or cast iron radiators,
2. Domestic clean washing water cylinders DCHW,
3. Air conditioning finned heater battery coils,
4. Under floor trace PEX heating pipe work,
5. Kick board fan coil blowers,
6. Swimming pools,
7. Hot tubs
UK PYROHM
The Water Jacket Tank because of the high capacity standing volume can also be incorporated in to the following applications and can perform the function of a centralised thermal buffer / accumulator water store in conjunction with other heat sources such as renewable or conventional:
1. Roof mounted wet solar panels,
2. Air and Ground source heat pump systems,
3. Heat recovery from static diesel generator radiators,
4. Waste heat rejection from milk sterilisation processing etc
