Heat on the Cheap
Wood in to Watts Latest PYROHM product news March 2012 Ohm Power Europe Ltd can now annouce that we are able to offer 4 Optional additional benefits and features on our PYROHM Biomass Boiler appliance: During 2011 as part of our ongoing development and improvement procedures we conducted PYROHM 600°C Pyrolysis evaluation and feasibility trials. The result of which is now the ability to be able to offer the extra duel energy facility of drawing off supplies of Bio Methane Wood SynGas (synthetic or synthesis gas) from the PYROHM Gasification Furnace Chamber of this heavily constructed and high solid wood fuel capacity appliance as well as the existing integral Central Heating Water Jacket Tank
Pyrolysis Wood Gas Bio Methane SynGas comprises flammable hydrocarbon gases such as volatile Hydrogen, Methane and Carbon Monoxide as well as inert Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide. The resulting gas mixture can be cooled, dried and filtered of impurities such as inerts, ash, tar and sulphur. SynGas can yield as much as 50% of the calorific thermal value of natural gas and can be used for the production of electricity in modified and retuned stationary internal combustion based petrol, diesel and gas genset alternator engines. Also as a clean Carbon Neutral replacement for conventional piped natural town gas or LPG for space or water heating units and even cooking via suitable appliances SynGas, a forgotten technology. During World War 2 with the low availability and restricted public access to petrol and diesel fuel, millions of vehicles and small scale stationary electricity generators throughout the UK, Europe, US and Russia including buses, coaches, lorries, tractors, trucks and even private cars were converted to successfully run their internal combustion engines from carbon neutral Green Eco-Friendly Pyrolysis Bio Methane Wood SynGas generated by onboard solid fuel furnace chambers (bumper burner barrels) With the current increasing cost of fossil fuels and also possible politically motivated decreased or interrupted supply issues, this established and recognised Pyrolysis Bio Methane SynGas technology is being reviewed once again as a viable cost effective, environmentally clean and reliable alternative energy solution by various government bodies and organisations such as the UK and EU Civil Protection, Emergency Planning, Disaster Management services and also the US Federal Emergency Management Agency
Just as a very crude example, a relatively small 20kW 1 phase 230VAC 50Hz output petrol driven electricity alternator generator set running on Bio Methane Wood SynGas supplied by a PYROHM appliance fed with "free home grown supplies of wood" running at 100% rated output load duty could save roughly the equivalent hourly use of approximately 10 litres of conventional fuel. At the current UK March 2012 £1.40 per litre of petrol, this could save in the region of £14 per hour or £330 per fully operational 24 hour day
Therefore for those in low population density, remote, rural and countryside areas with their own secure Biomass / wood fuel supplies, free of smoke control regulations and subjected to electrical power utility failures, this SynGas solution can be a viable cost effective and self sufficient alternative to conventional fossil fuel fed standby backup arrangements such as diesel generators The PYROHM can therefore be operated as a Twin / Dual Mode Biomass appliance During the Winter in Primary usage as a 1,000°C Gasification based Biomass combustion Central Heating system and then in its Secondary role as a 600°C Pyrolysis Biomethane SynGas Output arrangement when heating is not required at all, or when the operating temperature has been reached. For example, during the Winter a 50 / 50% operational time split basis between Heating and SynGas production might be typical Then in the late Spring, Summer and early Autumn months when Central Heating may not be necessary it converts over to 100% SynGas output only In essence, suitable PYROHM users could become their own small scale 3 Stage <100kWh independent Biomass based Heat, SynGas and Electricity energy producers. In effect forming locally based, fuelled and staffed Carbon Neutral Micro Tri-Generation Biomass power stations
We have established that PYROHM MIDI (12 hour fuel capacity burn period in Pyrolysis mode) frame size model appliances produce enough Bio SynGas to drive combustion engine electrical power generator sets rated as follows: PYROHM Model Maximum kWh thermal Rating - Genset Model Maximum Rating : 35kWh thermal - 10kVA / 8kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect 50kWh thermal - 15kVA / 12kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect 65kWh thermal - 20kVA / 16kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect 90kWh thermal - 30kVA / 24kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect 105kWh thermal - 40kVA / 32kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect 125kWh thermal - 50kVA / 40kW 240VAC 1ph 50Hz elect Compare this against the Capital infra-structure investment costs of just 1x typical 1,000kW (1.0MW) Anaerobic Digestion AD Bio Methane Double (1,000 cubic metre) Slurry Tank Plant + Gas Generators for site feasibility studies, planning application, ground clearance works, construction build charges, silage silo erection, materials and hardware etc at approx £1.5m per site This £1.5m level of investment could potentially provide enough funds for up to 40x PYROHM + 40kW Electricity Genset combinations and potentially generate significantly more energy at approx 1,600kW (1.6MW) total output The basic positive benefits of PYROHM appliances are, higher energy yield per £ spent, lower start up expenditure, higher parallel system resilience, wider Biomass fuel versatility, reduction of environmental impact and less potential decentralised methane safety risk speaks for itself. Instead of taking up the equivalent AD land space footprint of a football pitch each PYROHM + 50kW Genset arrangement could fit in a less obtrusive domestic double garage Think Global, Work Local
Ohm Power Europe, to the best of our research knowledge and in our professional opinion we believe that the PYROHM is possibly the World's 1st <100kWh commercially designed and built gasification grade Twin Yield Combined Heat and SynGas Output Mode Biomass appliance of its kind to this level of efficiency, innovation, scientific, specification and technical standards. However, if you know differently, please tell us, we would be very interested to find out more details and we stand to be corrected if our claim is inaccurate
We would welcome interest from suitable and major British & or EU wide synergetic Energy / Gas / Utility / Power / Heavy Plant companies, Carbon Reduction organisations, Biomass owners / suppliers / NFU, Eco-Friendly agencies and also Energy Lobbyist / Steering groups as the UK has agreed to meet significant Carbon Reduction and Sustainable Energy contribution targets by 2020 which the PYROHM could make contributions towards achieving This is in order to potentially form mutually beneficial collaborative and strategic joint business ventures to provide for instance, appliance leasing facilities, locally based Co-Operative Energy Generation schemes and electricity Feed in Tariff rebates to these new and diverse Green Biomass Energy market sectors. These include Domestic and small scale Agricultural, Commercial, Forestry and Industrial. Potentially there are 1,000s of applicable <100kWh UK Biomass sites which could give end users lucrative and tangible long term heat and gas energy benefits Please note: PYROHM appliances are Not Designed for Mobile SynGas engine applications due to their physical size, weight and water content and Must Only be used on suitable Stationary Generators. Any reference to vehicle engines is only to demonstrate the proven time served viability of this technology as an independent energy source 2 The Ohm Power Europe team is currently working on developing a Dry PYROHM 600°C Pyrolysis Bio Methane SynGas ONLY version which does NOT have a Wet Central Heating based Water Jacket Tank but instead a heavily constructed all round insulated weatherproof outdoor encapsulating casement housing It will be available in all 18 model rating frame sizes in each of the Mini, Midi and Maxi widths and also the 6 Furnace Chamber lengths from 600mm to 3,000mm long which will still be made from new superior 12 - 15mm thick BS grade steel plate. It will still be based on the heavy duty engineering, efficiency, emissions, innovation, quality, safety, scientific, specification and technical design technology used in producing our full scope Wet PYROHM Water Jacket Tank models and also still have a forecasted 30 year operational working design life This new Dry PYROHM Pyrolysis version configuration would be ideal for applications on Agricultural, Commercial, Forestry, Industrial sites where water based Central Heating is not necessary however the output production of Biomass based Bio Methane Wood SynGas for powering suitable Electricity Gensets, space heaters, gas boilers and even cooking appliances would be a desirable independent and secure energy source in potentially replacing conventional Natural Gas and also LPG. We are hoping to have it available for sale by June 2012, please contact us for more details 3 PYROHM units can now be supplied with an optional Vertical Fuel Chute Duct Port. Therefore as well as having the standard front mounted Access Hatch for manual loading of bulky irregular shaped Biomass, this new Fuel Chute Port potentially allows for the safe external docking of semi-auto-mechanical loading of eco-friendly wood chip, pellets, saw dust, shavings, crop chaff, husk, nut shells as well as non neutral carbon heavy coal and coke 4 PYROHM units can now be offered with an optional and customer inter-changeable Chimney Flue Catalytic Filter Pod. This reduces the PYROHM already low level existing Gasification grade solid waste exhaust emissions even further making it even cleaner The UK PYROHM more than just a Wood Boiler !!!

The UK supplier figures below only show a single stage price increase however, 2 - 3 have taken affect in real terms 2011 alone as well as a +5% VAT increase :
05/08/11 - E.ON announce 18.1% rise in piped town gas and 11.4% rise in electricity
|
|
21/07/11 - Scottish and Southern Energy announce 18% rise in piped town gas and 11% rise in electricity
|
|
08/07/11 - British Gas announce 18% rise in piped town gas and 16% rise in electricity
|
|
08/06/11 - Scottish Power announce 19% rise in piped town gas and 10% rise in electricity
Heating Oil and LPG are very likely to rise by at least a similar amount this year alone
Even Wood Fuel Pellets are increasing and these can now cost about 25 pence per kg or about 2 litres in pellet volume capacity
Two years ago these only cost about 15 pence per kg as an indication of growth So at this 25 pence price rate, a 1 metric tonne, ( 1,000kg ) load of wood pellets can cost as much as £250 25kWh 24 hour load costs about £17 100kWh 24 hour load costs about £70 With Wood Pellet Cat Litter and Pet Bedding costing as much as +120% more at about 56 pence per kg in supermarkets and pet shops it will probably only be a matter of time before pellet fuel price levels grow significantly as producers make a higher profit selling it as litter and bedding material Whereas, " Free Home Grown Wood Supplies " whether in the form of un-processed logs or waste production wood, demolition or scrap timber which is free today will hopefully be free in the future
